On August 12th 2006, the world will be celebrating International Youth Day 2006, where the efforts and potential of young people will be recognized and celebrated.Fittingly the Trinidad & Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) will host the closing ceremony for its Fourth Olympic Youth Camp, at the Audio Visual room of the Hasley Crawford Stadium, Wrightson Road Port of Spain tomorrow (Saturday) starting at 1:00PM.
This closing ceremony will recognize the thirty six (36) young athletes who spent the last ten days learning about the value of sport in an effort to become more focused and well rounded athletes.
The Olympic youth camp is part of the TTOC's ongoing effort to identify the next generation of Olympians.
During the duration of the camp, the campers were exposed to information on the Olympic Movement, Olympism, The Olympic Games, Sport and the Environment, Creative Writing, Ball Room Dancing, Exercise Physiology, Nutrition, Goal Setting, Conflict Resolution, Ethics, Etiquette, Sport and the Environment, Media Training and other exciting activities.
To the delight of the campers got the chance to meet many of their sporting heroes and in the processing learning some of the "secrets" of success.
Ato Boldon,Roger Daniel,Candace Scott and Micheal Phillips along with Soca Warriors assistant National coach Anton Corneal were some of the local sporting heroes appearing at the camp.
Dr Basil Ince lecture on T&T 's Olympic Games history was another well received session.While top swimming coach and media personality Anil Roberts also gave of his time.
The Olympic Movement is an educational movement for young people worldwide. It grew out of modern Olympism, seeking to help build a better and more peaceful world. Through the camp and exposing our young athletes to these critical lessons, the TTOC continue to fulfil its responsibilities to ensuring the preservation of the Olympic legacy and the continued use of sport as a tool for human development.
The closing ceremony will see the campers receive their certificates of participation.
The campers will themselves show what they have learnt with seven interactive and exciting presentations.
Camp Coordinator Ravi Lutchman said the sky is the limit for the campers and their aspirations for success will be their guide.
TTOC Secretary-General the Chairman of the TTOC OLympic Academy and camp director believes that nothwithstanding the many challenges hosting the Olympic youth camp is an invalubale investment in the youth.
"Working with young people in today's environment is not easy.But we believe that we can make a positive difference.we have faith in their talent and potential. The youth of the nation need a lot of love not condemnation.".
The TTOC Olympic Youth camp is part funded by the IOC through it's Olympic Solidarity programme and contributions from TTOC Corporate partners Guardian Life,Bhp Billition,Adidas and Sportflex.
