Following is a statement released yesterday by the Minsitry of sport regarding the financial assistance being given to the national women’s football team:
“With regard to the participation of the national senior women’s team in the final round of World Cup 2015 qualification, the official request and accompanying documentation from the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) was only received at the office of Minister of Sport, Dr the Honourable Rupert Griffith late Tuesday afternoon at 3.30 p.m. Minister Griffith dispatched copies of the correspondence and supporting documents to officials at the Ministry of Sport and the Sports Company who immediately began the necessary processing to facilitate payments.
Earlier today (Wednesday), TTFA General Secretary Sheldon Phillips received an initial payment of TT$250,000.00 from the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago. The Ministry of Sport and the Sports Company will continue to work with the TTFA in order to expedite the additional payments associated with the team’s World Cup qualification campaign. The total request from the TTFA for the campaign is TT$873,118.67 (US$137,715.88).
The Ministry of Sport and the Sports Company remain committed to providing the necessary support to national athletes and teams but remind National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs) that the timely submission of documentation is critical to facilitate the necessary oversight, protocols and procedures associated with the release of state funds.”
TTOC not backing down on fitness standard for CAC Games
The Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) has told National Sport Organizations (NSOs) that the TTOC's fitness standards, criteria and process will not be compromised.
The TTOC communicated its policy and process to all NSOs since last year and way in advance of 2014 Commonwealth and Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC).
Transparency is an important aspect of the TTOC's selection process.
On Saturday 11th October at 9am the TTOC will stage the final Beep Test at the Jean Pierre Indoor facility in Port of Spain.
The TTOC communicated in writing and at meetings since last year the required beep test standards and the dates for the Beep Test.
The TTOC , the Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago Elite Development Unit and Michael Johnson Performance Centre has worked together since May this year to ensure that in particular Team Sports and locally based athletes desirous of qualifying and participating at the Commonwealth Games, Youth Olympic Games and Central American and Caribbean( CAC) Games had the sport science based support, advice and programmes to address any shortcomings or deficiencies.
Annette Knott, TTOC secretary general and Chef de Mission for the upcoming CAC Games said the TTOC will not tolerate or accept any attempt by NSOs to compromise or subvert the fitness and selection policy or process .
"None of the NSOs can say that they don't know what is the policy or standard. Once an event is under the TTOC we stand by our selection process."
The TTOC has to submit the Trinidad and Tobago delegation list to CAC Games officials by Tuesday 14th October Saturday's test is the final opportunity for athletes and Team Sports to meet the fitness standard.
The TTOC General Council will convene on Friday 10th October at Olympic House to receive and consider the recommendations of the Executive Committee in respect of the proposed CAC Games delegation.
Candice Scott to be inducted into Florida Hall of Fame
Former T&T and University of Flordia field athlete Candice Scott was among a list of seven past school greats, who earned a spot in the induction class of UF’s 2015 Hall of Fame, on Tuesday.
The announcement was made by the University on Tuesday. Scott joins Beth Farmer (track), Camilo Beneditti (golf), Matt Bonner (basketball), Nicole McCray Thorn (volleyball), Camilo Villegas (golf) and Stephanie Zunich Donley (swimming and diving).
Both Farmer and Scott left their marks on the Florida track and field programme. Scott won five national championships in the weight and hammer throw while donning the Orange
and Blue. School record-holder in both the weight throw and hammer throw, Scott picked up the 2002, 2004 and 2005 indoor national titles in the weight throw, and was also crowned the 2003 and 2004 hammer throw champion outdoors. Throughout her collegiate career, Scott eclipsed the NCAA’s best mark in the weight throw numerous times.
Scott, 34, still stands on UF’s all-time top-10 lists in four events, the shot put and weight throw indoors, and the shot and hammer throw outdoors. Her personal best throw is 71.45m, which she achieved at Marietta, Georgia, in 2005. On the international front, Scott, won gold twice at the Junior Carifta Games (1998, 1999), a Pan American bronze in 2003 and two CAC gold medals in 2005 and 2008.
Top riders expected at Republic Day Cycling Classic
Top local and international cyclists will feature in 18 races at the Michael Phillips Republic Day Cycling Classic tomorrow around the Nelson Mandela Park (formerly King George V Park), Port-of-Spain, from 2 pm.
Heading the local contingent are endurance riders Varun Maharajh and Jovian Gomez. The pair recently returned from the Elite Pan American Track Cycling Championships in Mexico and will be among the favourites. On Sunday Maharajh won the elite open/invitational category of the Keep Fit Criterium on the Diego Martin Highway. Gomez will be hoping for a medal this time around after finishing fourth on Sunday.
A pair of T&T siblings are also expected to line up tomorrow. Adam and Joshua Alexander will face the starter, while Jude and Marc Codrington will aim to get on the podium.
The main event will close the day’s proceedings at 4.35 pm with a 30-lap event. The first prize in the main event is $1600 and a trophy, while the second and third place finishers will walk away with $800 and $450 respectively. Prior to the main event, riders will battle in categories such as the ladies senior, ladies junior, tinymites, juveniles and Veterans 60 and over.
There will also be races in memory of the late Roger Smart and Clinton Grant, who both served T&T cycling for many years.
At a media conference yesterday at Flair restaurant, Ariapita Avenue, Port-of-Spain, former national cyclist Michael Phillips and event coordinator, reflected on his journey over the years as a cycling promoter. Phillips started his company Phillip Promotions in his grandmother’s home and is now one of the leading promoters of cycling in the country. “When I decided to take this up (promoting cycling), people told me I was wasting my time, I said it was a challenge I wanted to take.” Phillips also owns a bike store called Mike’s Bikes, opposite Flair Restaurant.
Former national cyclist Roger Gibbon and former president of the T&T Olympic Committee Larry Romany lauded Phillips for his efforts in promoting cycling for the past 18 years. Gibbon said: “Competition is critical to the development of the athlete. Sport needs someone like Michael Phillips.” Gibbon told Phillips there would be obstacles along the way but not to give up on promoting the sport.
Diane Henderson representing TTO at Toronto 2015 meeting
Diane Henderson, Assistant Secretary General of the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee(TTOC) is representing the national Olympic committee at a Toronto 2015 Pan Am and Parapan American Games Chef de Mission seminar currently taking place in Toronto, Canada. At the seminar attendees will visit venues and address a number of issues related to next year's MULTI SPORT event.
The Pan Games will be held 10-26 July, 2015 and the Parapan American Games 7-15 August.
The 2015 Pan American Games will become the third Pan American Games hosted by Canada and the first by the province of Ontario. Previously, Canada hosted the 1967 Pan American Games and the 1999 Pan American Games, both in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The 2015 Parapan American Games will be held twelve days after the Pan American Games.
The TORONTO Pan Am 2015 Games, which open on July 10, 2015, will feature an estimated 6,000 athletes from 41 countries competing in 36 sports, including women's baseball and golf for the first time, in venues located in 15 municipalities in southern Ontario. Together with the Parapan Am Games, they will be the largest international multisport Games ever held in Canada.

The Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) has made solving the problem a priority .
