I continue to lobby and advocate hard and relentlessly for respect and recognition for a sport industry in T&T. There are a number of engines that will power the economic growth of the local sport industry.

One of these engines is women’s sports. In the coming years there will be a boom in women’s sports in T&T. There will be a greater demand for sport services that promote more and more participation by women and girls. There will also be an increase in spectator appeal and interest. The commercial and sponsorship value of women’s sport will experience exponential growth.

People continue to ask me about the Future is Female programme and as such I will again share via this column details about the programme and project concept.

Future is Women: What is it? Why? Who? When? Where? How?

To achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. The T&T Olympic Committee (TTOC) launched the Future is Women Project in January. The programme will champion and advocate for gender equality at all levels of Olympic, and Commonwealth sport in T&T.

Future is Women will seek, through collaboration and partnerships, to encourage and empower increased participation of women and girls in sport and physical activity not only as athletes, but also coaches, sports medicine and sport science providers, administrators, leaders and sports media.

Project Aim

Equal opportunity for women and girls; equal chances to succeed at all levels of sport. To encourage and empower increased participation of women and girls in sport and physical activity not only as athletes, but also coaches, sports medicine and sport science providers, administrators, leaders and sports media

Project Objectives

To ensure that Team TTO women athletes are given the help they need to translate and elevate their talent to the Olympic podium. To use workshops and seminar as a platform to educate and generate awareness on social issues that negatively impact women and girls. To promote, educate and champion for sustainable positive social change and facilitate opportunities for women and girls in sport.

Project Description

The programme will work in three phases all targeted at empowering women and girls to foster sporting excellence and a lifelong passion for sport.

The extent of the potential of the local sport industry to produce and market sport-related products and services will require entrepreneurial and managerial talent to envision, drive, manage, coordinate the processes of producing and marketing sport products and services.

Women’s sport as stated is only one of the engines. I am not afraid to use words such as significant and phenomenal when I talk about or describe the economic potential and future possibilities for the local sport industry.

The economic significance of the sport industry - economic activity and the estimates of the gross domestic sports product will one day in the not too distant future become mainstream discussions among academia and policy makers.

Women and girls will be high up on the sport industry agenda.
