The Jamaican Olympic Association (JOA) have officially confirmed that one of their athletes from Beijing 2008 has tested positive for banned performance-enhancing drugs following a re-analysis of the samples.
insidethegames revealed yesterday that re-testing of a sample from Nesta Carter, a member of the 4x100 metres relay team that won the Olympics, had revealed traces of the stimulant methylhexanamine.
The JOA have now revealed that they have been contacted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) but are refusing to confirm the name.
"The JOA will not be in a position to provide any further details on the matter until a hearing has determined the outcome of the issue and we have been officially advised," they said in a statement.
Carter ran the opening leg in Beijing on a team anchored by Usain Bolt as he won the third of his three Olympic gold medals at Beijing 2008.
If Carter's positive test is confirmed, then Jamaica could be stripped of that medal.
Caribbean neighbours Trinidad and Tobago would be promoted to the gold medal, Japan to the silver and Brazil to the bronze.
Methylhexanamine was only added specifically to the banned list by the World Anti-Doping Agency in 2010.
Prior to that, however, it a prohibited substance under a catch-all category.
If found guilty, the 30-year-old Carter could face a ban of up to two years, the maximum sanction at the time under the World Anti-Doping Code.
