WORLD YOUTH silver medallist Khalifa St Fort completed an impressive sprint double on the second day of the NGC/NAAA Carifta trials at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo yesterday.
St Fort ran away with the girls Under-20 200 metres in 23.64 seconds to add to her victory in the 100m on Saturday. Watched by her coach, TT ’s quadruple Olympic medallist Ato Boldon, the 18-yearold defied the wet track to finish well ahead of the field and dipped inside the 24.00 Carifta standard.
Taking second spot was 400m champion Renee Stoddard (Speed Factory) 24.59 and Jada Barker (Cougars) 24.83.
On Saturday, she won the 100m in 11.39 to book her ticket to this year’s Carifta Games in Grenada from March 26-28.
Reigning Carifta gold medallist Akanni Hislop (Zenith) copped the boys Under-20 half lap in a wind assisted time of 21.09 to leave Kashief King (Pt Fortin New Jets) 21.52 and Jerod Elcock (Abilene Wildcats) 21.92 behind. Hislop blazed past the 21.40 standard.
Another Carifta champion Tyriq Horsford, also of Zenith, stole the headlines on day two setting a national youth record in winning the boys Under-18 javelin with a throw of 71.5 metres. Horsford eclipsed the previous national record of 70.73 which he set in winning the event at last year’s Carifta Games in St Kitts/Nevis.
Horsford was well inside the Carifta standard of 59.00. Jante Lewis (Mayaro) finished in the runner-up spot (50.27). Horsford was one of four javelin throwers from the Zenith Athletic Club to achieve the Carifta standards in their age groups.
Vandell Joseph and Odell Joseph finished one-two in the boys Under- 20 event. Joseph, the Carifta bronze medallist in the boys Under- 18 event in 2015, took the top spot with 59.39 ahead of Joefield’s 58.31 as the two went over the 57.00 standard.
On Saturday team-mate, last year’s Carifta silver medallist Asha James, walked away with the girls Under-18 javelin with 43.59 (standard- 40.00).
Kershell Mc Intyre (Cougars) celebrated her birthday by taking the girls Under 18 800m finals in a Carifta qualifying time of 2:25.77 to beat her team-mate Joanna Rogers (2:16.51) and the standard of 2:16.00. Another Cougars duo reigned in the boys Under-18 800m finals as Jaden St Louis won in 1:59.54 ahead of Recardo Prescott (1:59.76).
St Louis bettered the Carifta standard of 1:59.60. However, Prescott was the quickest of the day clocking 1:57.85 in the heats in the morning session.
Anya Akili (Kaizen Panthers) won a very competitive girls open hepathlon. Akili competed the seven events with 4272 points to beat Antonia Sealy (Pt. Fortin New Jets), 4207 and Ayanna Glasgow (Toco TAFAC) 4083.
Ian West (Pt Fortin New Jets) copped the boys open octathlon with 5280 points to deny Kerlon Ashby (Kaizen Panthers) 4841 and Michael McKenzie (Alpha) 4748 and Aaron Caesar (Pt. Fortin New Jets) 4591 as all four were superior to the 4500 standard.
