The TTOC Elderly Aquatic Program

The Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee began its innovative development to provide physical activity for elderly persons in the community. In a society where often elderly citizens are seen as weak, frail and inactive, we needed to design an activity that catered to both physical and psychological enhancement.

The provision of water-based recreation geared towards those persons who, because of their physical limitations, are unable to participate in even the low-impact activities was undoubtedly the answer.  This aquatic program would allow individuals to exercise without putting excess strain on joints or muscles. The social interaction can help decrease feelings of depression and isolation, and progress in aquatic activities can to lead to independence and improved self esteem.

The Shape the Community Sport Program’s goal is to provide a program that is accessible to senior citizens who are unable to participate in the more traditional exercise programs, whilst in a safe and comfortable environment throughout communities in Trinidad and Tobago.
