The Executive Committee of the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC), led by TTOC President, Brian Lewis, yesterday moved one step closer to the introduction of an annual CANOC Week across is membership. This was one of several actions taken during the meeting convened at the office of the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) on Saturday 16 December 2017.
The CANOC Executive discussed plans for the inaugural celebration of CANOC Week scheduled for 4 – 10 March 2018. These plans commit each of the CANOC members to participating in a region-wide activity celebrating Caribbean Women in Sport on 8 March, International Women’s Day. Members would each also organize some sporting activities involving all sport stakeholders in their respective countries during CANOC Week.
The CANOC Executive also agreed to officially observe 31 July of each year as CANOC Day. It was on 31 July 2003, that CANOC was officially launched at a General Assembly in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The Executive is engaging members for ideas regarding ways in which to celebrate the annual CANOC Day.
A proposal by Guadeloupe to host the Caribbean Games in 2021 was also among other matters discussed by the Executive at its Port of Spain meeting. The inaugural Caribbean Games were cancelled just two weeks prior to its original dates in 2009 as a result of the H1N1 virus in Trinidad and Tobago. The French Caribbean territory has already submitted proposed sports for inclusion of what would be a four-day competition programme.
